TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber believes the recent fall in consumer price index (CPI) annual inflation figures will bring ‘relief’ to millions of struggling homes.

He added that the falling inflation needed to be matched by pay rises.

The Union leader was commenting on the latest inflation figures published, which show that consumer price index (CPI) annual inflation fell to 3 per cent and retail price index (RPI) annual inflation fell to 3.5 per cent in April.

Mr Barber said: “(This) sharp fall in inflation will bring relief to millions of people struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living. But with earnings growing by just 0.6 per cent, people are still getting poorer every month. We need falling inflation to be matched with far better pay rises to get people’s incomes growing again. This will only happen when our economy is moving in the right direction.”
